How a solar system fits together
A solar system has four main parts. Panels make the power, the inverter turns it into electricity your home can use, and mounting holds everything on the roof. Cabling joins the parts together, and a battery is an optional extra because it stores spare power for later.
Start with the part that sets the size of the rest. For most homes that is the panel array, since the inverter, mounting and cable all follow from it. However, if you already own panels, begin with the inverter or the battery instead.
If you are new to solar, read our solar panel kits buying guide first. Moreover, the solar inverter comparison and the home battery storage cost guide explain the two choices that often cost the most. The guide to MC4 connectors helps with the wiring.
When you are ready to browse, you can open solar panels and kits, solar inverters or battery storage. The mounting and fixings and cabling and connectors pages cover the parts that complete the job.
Common mistakes to avoid
Buying parts that do not match is the most common mistake. For example, an inverter with too small a rating wastes panel output on bright days. Similarly, a connector that does not suit the cable size makes a poor joint.
Skipping the mounting check is another. The roof type decides the fixing, so confirm yours before you order. As a result, you avoid delays and returns once the job starts.
Check the specs on each listing before you buy. Although a kit saves time, a larger home may still need extra parts, so ask us if you are unsure.
Trade and bulk buying
Installers and larger buyers can ask for trade and bulk pricing across the range. Our trade page explains how to open an account. For instance, a pallet of panels or a long run of cable can be priced as one order.
